Everything You Actually Need to Know for a Civil Ceremony in Downtown San Diego
Getting married at the San Diego Courthouse or San Diego County Administration Center (that’s the actual name of the building for anyone confused like I was when I first started photographing here), is one of those experiences that feels simple on paper but surprisingly emotional and meaningful in real life.
I remember some of my first weddings I photographed here, crazy to think of how many have been captured since that day… I honestly expected them to feel super casual and maybe even a little underwhelming. But I was completely wrong.
Every couple I’ve worked with here has had such a beautiful, meaningful experience. The ceremonies are sweet, intentional, and surprisingly emotional in the best BEST way.
When couples choose to marry outside, they’re often able to have a small group of guests with them sometimes even up to around 20 people standing by their side, which makes it feel intimate but still celebratory.
And what really elevates the entire day is everything surrounding it: a bouquet in hand, getting ready with professional hair and makeup, planning a nice dinner or small reception afterward, and of course having photography to document it all.
All of those pieces together turn what people often assume will be “simple” into something that feels deeply special, almost like a full wedding day, just in a more intimate and intentional way and without all the crazy stress and drama that sometimes comes with a bigger day.
This guide is meant to walk you through what the experience actually feels like, what to expect, and how to make the most of your wedding day there as a couple (and not just as a checklist).
What It Actually Feels Like to Get Married Here
Most couples arrive expecting something quick, formal, and a little impersonal.
And while the ceremony itself is efficient, what surprises people most is how emotional it becomes in such a public, structured space.
You’re standing in the middle of downtown San Diego, surrounded by architecture, movement, and everyday life but in that moment, everything narrows down to just the two of you.
That contrast is what makes it so memorable. Not to mention the amazing weather in San Diego and the beautiful building as your backdrop.

- Wait for your name to be called

Everything moves fairly quickly, so giving yourself extra time helps reduce stress and lets you actually be present.
One of the biggest emotional shifts happens right before you walk in…this is when it usually starts to feel real. I notice a huge difference in not only the images but the experience of my couples with people who arrive earlier than they think they need to versus on time or rushing late.
Ceremony Experience (Simple Yet Meaningful)
The ceremony itself is typically short and straightforward.
There isn’t a lot of extra production or personalization, which is exactly why couples often choose it.
You’ll exchange vows, sign documents, and officially become married in a matter of minutes but those minutes tend to carry a lot more weight than expected. Not only this but something I always encourage my couples who are wanting this is to ask your officiant before if you are able to share some personal vows. As long as they are not too long, they will allow you to do this. Many of our couples will also do a private vow exchange before the ceremony and we will document it. Makes for such sweet images to remember.
The simplicity is what allows emotion to come forward during these ceremonies. There isn’t the stress of everything working out perfectly and fitting all these different things into your day. It is just about you two truly enjoying this time together either with some close friends and family or just by youselves.
Right After: The Most Underrated Part of the Day
This is where the experience really opens up from my view when working with 100+ courthouse couples.
Once you are official it is all fun from there on out!
This is usually when couples:
- breathe for the first time all day
- realize they are actually married (so funny how it doesn’t click yet for so many)
- start laughing, crying, or both
- begin portraits together without pressure
This transition is one of the most meaningful parts of courthouse weddings and often becomes the favorite memory of the entire day. I love capturing the moments right after you tied the knot, it’s so fun to see those genuine connections you make with one another and we are here to snag those candids for you.
Best Photo Opportunities Around the Administration Center
One of the biggest advantages of getting married here is the surrounding downtown architecture.
Depending on lighting and time of day, you’ll often find beautiful backdrops just steps away, the administration building alone is enough to provide for beautiful images for a full gorgeous gallery:
- Clean architectural lines of the building itself
- Wide open spaces for portraits
- Shaded walkways for softer light
- Downtown San Diego textures and city energy- the blue tiles are a big show stopper here for couples
The key is not rushing this part, this is where your gallery truly comes to life and these are the moments you will frame on your wall, build an album with etc. and take with you after this day is gone.
Timing Tips for Better Photos
Lighting plays a huge role here.
Midday ceremonies can be bright and high contrast, while later afternoon ceremonies often give softer, more flattering light for portraits. We also really love a mid morning timeframe too, usually recommend that hour as it works great for peoples schedule after the wedding is done.
If possible, consider:
- planning extra time after your ceremony for photos
- avoiding rushing directly to your next reservation
- giving space for candid moments to unfold naturally and not feel like you have to rush
Some of the most meaningful images happen in between the planned moments, and those are often our favorite photos to deliver. We want you to have those memories to look back on, but when a timeline is too tight or rushed, it becomes harder to slow down and capture them naturally.

Guest Experience: What It Feels Like for Our Couples Guests!
If you’re bringing guests, the experience is typically very relaxed and informal.
There’s no long program or extended structure something that guests absolutely LOVE…so guests often experience the day as more intimate and personal than expected and always give compliments on how nice and enjoyable it was.
We see many tears at our many courthouse weddings we have shot and it always is so previous. I remember one couple who cried so much they were laughing and it truly made for the absolute sweetest ceremony, you could never have planned a bigger day to be that special purposefully.
Common Questions Couples Ask
Is it still emotional even though it’s quick?
100% yes, often more than a bigger day. The simplicity removes distractions and puts focus on the moment itself.
Can we take portraits nearby afterward?
Yes yes yes!! Most couples do, and the surrounding area is ideal for it so we don’t have to go far to get really amazing photos.
How long should we plan for photos?
Plan more time than you think you’ll need but you don’t need a ton. This is probably something our couples ask all the time. This part of the day tends to unfold naturally but our most booked amount of time is between 1-2 hours. It really depends on the amount of people you have coming and how many locations you would like photographed.
What should we prioritize most?
Feeling good, feeling like your best version of yourself and being as calm and relaxed as you can. Everything else moves quickly, but the emotional experience is what lasts and we want our couples to really embrace their day so we will keep you on track so you don’t have to worry about it.
