Planning a Ventura courthouse wedding? You do not need a huge wedding to have a day that feels incredibly special.

A courthouse wedding in Ventura can be simple, intimate, beautiful, and completely personal… whether it is just the two of you, a few close family members, or a small group of your favorite people.

As a photographer specializing in courthouse weddings, civil ceremonies, elopements, and intimate weddings throughout Ventura County and Southern California, I help couples turn a short courthouse ceremony into a wedding day that feels like so much more than simply signing paperwork.

From the courthouse and ceremony to portraits around Ventura, your first moments as newlyweds deserve to be documented beautifully.

One of the biggest questions I hear from couples is:

“What does a Ventura courthouse wedding actually look like?”

The answer depends on how you want your day to feel.

Some couples want to keep things incredibly simple:

Marriage license → civil ceremony → a few portraits → dinner together.

Others use their courthouse ceremony as the beginning of a small wedding day and add flowers, champagne, family portraits, a first look, a special meal, or portraits somewhere beautiful around Ventura afterward.

There is no right way to do it. And honestly, that is one of the things I love most about courthouse weddings. You can create a wedding day around you two, rather than around a traditional wedding checklist.

Where Is the Ventura Courthouse?

The Ventura Superior Court Hall of Justice is located at:

800 S. Victoria Avenue
Ventura, CA 93009

The Hall of Justice is part of the Ventura County Government Center.

Ventura County’s Clerk-Recorder is the county office responsible for marriage-license and civil marriage services. Because courthouse and marriage-license procedures can change, I always recommend checking the county’s current requirements directly before your wedding day.

As far as wedding photos, we typically take family photos and couples shots after the ceremony at the San Buenaventura City hall, this is the beautiful white buildings you see in the photos within this blog. It is gorgeous!

What Does a Ventura Courthouse Wedding Cost?

The cost of a courthouse wedding depends on the marriage-license and ceremony services you choose, as well as how much of your wedding day you decide to photograph.

Your photography investment is separate from the fees charged by the county and courthouse.

And this is where I encourage couples to think beyond simply asking:

“How much does one hour of courthouse photography cost?”

Instead, ask:

“How much of our wedding day do we actually want to remember?”

Your ceremony might only take a short amount of time.

But there are so many moments surrounding it:

  • Getting ready
  • Your first look
  • Walking into the courthouse
  • Seeing each other before the ceremony
  • Family photos
  • The ceremony itself, where permitted
  • Walking out as newlyweds
  • Champagne or a celebratory toast
  • Wedding rings
  • Bouquet and dress details
  • Couples portraits
  • Candid moments with parents and family
  • Exploring Ventura together
  • Your first moments alone as husband and wife

Those are the photographs that turn a courthouse appointment into a wedding story.

How Much Photography Coverage Do You Need?

For most Ventura courthouse weddings that I photograph, I recommend at least 1.5 hours of photography if you want more than a handful of quick portraits.

One hour can work for a very simple celebration, especially if you are keeping your guest list tiny and want a streamlined experience where we only do the ceremony or only photograph at the second location (San Buenaventura City Hall).

But if you want your gallery to feel like a complete wedding day rather than a few photos at the courthouse, additional time gives us room to breathe.

A typical 1.5-hour Ventura courthouse wedding might look like:

20–30 minutes:
Arrival, details, family, and candid moments

10–20 minutes:
Ceremony and surrounding moments, where photography is permitted

20–30 minutes:
Family and group portraits

30–45 minutes:
Couples portraits around San Buenaventura City Hall

And if you have more time, we can slow everything down even further.

There is a huge difference between trying to squeeze your entire wedding into a few rushed minutes and having time to actually enjoy the experience.

Why Ventura Is Such a Great Place for a Courthouse Wedding

One of my favorite things about photographing courthouse weddings in Ventura is that you are not limited to the courthouse itself.

You can have the simplicity of a civil ceremony and then create beautiful portraits that feel much more like a traditional wedding experience.

Ventura gives you access to historic architecture, downtown streets, coastal scenery, palm trees, gardens, and beach locations depending on the look you want.

And that means your gallery doesn’t have to look like a courthouse gallery.

It can look like a beautiful wedding.

For couples who want a little more variety, we can also build your photography timeline around another Ventura location after the ceremony.

For example, we can photograph:

  • Your wedding portraits
  • Walking hand-in-hand through downtown
  • Candid newlywed moments
  • Family portraits
  • Your bouquet and ring details
  • A celebratory toast
  • Romantic coastal portraits
  • A relaxed dinner or celebration afterward

Ventura Courthouse Wedding Photographer Who Knows the Area

If you are searching for a Ventura courthouse wedding photographer, I don’t think you should simply choose someone because they have pretty wedding photos, you will want to choose someone who knows courthouse weddings since they are a lot different than a typical wedding day. They also go by a lot faster so knowing the courthouse is definitely a plus! Check out another Ventura Courthouse wedding here!

Courthouse weddings are different from traditional weddings.

The timeline is often short.

There may be rules about where photography is permitted.

You may not have a wedding planner directing everyone.

And there isn’t always a giant wedding venue with obvious portrait locations.

That means your photographer needs to know how to work quickly without making you feel rushed.

This is a huge part of what I specialize in!

I have photographed hundreds of courthouse weddings and intimate weddings throughout Southern California, and I know how to guide couples who may be thinking:

“We have no idea what we’re supposed to do in front of a camera.”

This may be the thing I am asked the most or that my couples express the most, and I always say….you are not alone in this and that’s my job.

I’ll give you natural direction while leaving plenty of room for the candid moments that make your photographs feel like you.

What Should You Wear to a Ventura Courthouse Wedding?

The beautiful thing about a courthouse wedding is that you can wear whatever feels like you.

Some couples wear a traditional wedding dress and suit. Others choose a simple white dress, jumpsuit, tailored suit, or something they can comfortably move around in afterward.

For photographs, I always encourage couples to think about the entire day rather than just the ceremony.

If you are planning portraits around Ventura afterward, consider:

  • Comfortable shoes or a second pair of shoes
  • A bouquet
  • Simple, timeless accessories
  • A veil if you want a traditional bridal look
  • A jacket or second layer if you’re getting married during cooler weather
  • Wedding rings and meaningful details

And don’t underestimate the impact of flowers, this is by far my number one recommendation and tip is to purchase a professional bouquet!

Even a simple courthouse wedding can feel incredibly elevated with a beautiful bouquet or small arrangement…here is more of a detailed blog on what you need to make your courthouse wedding feel special. And here is a blog that helps to narrow down what to wear to your courthouse wedding.

Should You Bring a Bouquet to Your Ventura Courthouse Wedding?

100%, absolutely!

A bouquet is one of my favorite ways to make a courthouse wedding feel more like a wedding without adding a lot of extra expense or complexity. It also gives you something natural to hold during portraits, adds color and texture to your gallery, and gives us another beautiful detail to photograph.

You don’t need an enormous arrangement, a small tasteful bouquet is perfect.

What About Family Photos?

If your parents, siblings, grandparents, or closest friends are joining you, I highly recommend building time into your photography coverage for family photos.

These are often the photographs that become the most meaningful years later. I love photographing you two with the people who came to celebrate you, then transition into couples portraits so the rest of your time feels more relaxed and romantic.

I typically have my couples put together the different variations of family photos so that on the day of we are not standing aimlessly wondering who should be photographed. If it is a small group, the list may not be necessary but either way I have a mental list of the best variations and groups to photograph based on my experience.

What If We’re Nervous in Front of the Camera?

You are in very good company. This is truly the feeling from more than half of my couples and they always say how enjoyable the process was and how lovely it was, no stress at all.

I don’t expect you to be professional models, I just want you to enjoy your time at your wedding and have fun taking beautiful photos!

My photography style is natural, romantic, candid, and lightly directed. I’ll tell you where to stand, how to move, where to look, and what to do with your hands when you need direction but I don’t want your photographs to feel overly posed.

Some of my favorite images happen in between the poses when you are focused on each other, I will step in when I feel like it’s needed but I don’t want anything too forced.

How Long Should We Book a Ventura Courthouse Photographer?

If you’re simply looking for a few photographs around your ceremony a one hour session should be enough. However if you want the ceremony + family photos/portraits after, I typically recommend 1.5 – 2 hours.

And if you want to turn your courthouse ceremony into a true intimate wedding experience….with getting ready, a first look, family, portraits, and multiple locations, we can build a longer custom timeline.

The goal isn’t to sell you more hours ever, the goal is to make sure you have enough time to actually enjoy the day without feeling like we’re racing a clock and vapture all the memories you will cherish forever. This day is still so magical and special even if it didn’t cost you $50,000+.
